[UPDATE] AUG-30-2024: New photos have emerged of the upcoming Black-Metallic 5s. Thanks to idontsellshoes/prm.cotd on IG, we get a clearer look at the 3M trim and reflective NIKE AIR on the heel.

AUG-28-2024: Today, thanks to @fk.llc (IG), we got a first glimpse of the “Reimagined” Black-Metallic Air Jordan 5s. How are they reimagined you ask? Well, in addition to the 3M tongue from the OGs, the ’25 version will have 3M piping details and white laces. The white laces are a tribute to MJ’s switching to white laces in the first round of the 1990 playoffs against the Milwaukee Bucks. But traditional black lace fans needn’t worry, the upcoming retros will also come with black laces too. They drop on February 8, 2025 at select Jordan Brand retailers, both in-store and online, as well as on Nike.com for $210 USD.

Yes, mostly. It's still a question if the NIKE AIR on the back will be stitched, or something else.

The 'piping' throughout the shoe is most likely not 'stitching' but simply reflective matirial.

The other element of reimagined is the white laces they come with.

He only wore them with white laces 5 times, it was for the 1st round series vs the Bucks. All of the Bulls players wore white accessories for the series, wristbands/compressions/etc. MJ decided to also do white laces. The next round vs the sixers they did red accessories, but he didn't do red laces. So he wore them with black laces 13 times including the All-Star game.

OG durabuck was made by a company Nike bought and put out of business 29 years ago. It’s never coming back if I had to guess

Not exactly. United States Shoe Corporation was responsible for the production of Durabuck and finally trademarked it in 1991. Nike was buying materials from them but never bought the company out. Not only in 1998 did US Shoe not renew the trademark because they no longer produced the material, but in 1995 an Italian Eyewear company by the name of Luxottica attempted a hostile takeover of the company (in hopes of acquiring LensCrafters, who US Shoe owned at the time).

Luxottica would end up buying US Shoe for $1.3B in April that year, and in the month prior, US Shoe would sell its shoe division to fashion retailer Nine West. If there were any documents detailing the process of creating the original Durabuck, I would assume they were either lost in the takeover, they're sitting in some old file cabinet somewhere, or they were tossed out.

I’m obviously in for probably multiples but I will say I’m surprised at all the 2016 retro slander. The ‘16 isn’t perfect but they are far from trash. They got some notable things right on that retro besides just the NA IMO, mainly the materials. The faux durabuck that JB used on those and a few other remastered OG retros at that time (Aqua 8s, Bordeaux 7s) was money. The edges have the grey/white lines and my pair at least actually has a contrast heal collar. Not as prominent as the OG but it’s there. I hope they use the same upper materials from the ‘16 pair on this new pair. They don’t need to change that. Also I really didn’t have too much of a problem with the ‘16 shape because previous retros were much, much worse. All they need to do to this new pair is slim the ankle pods, slim/slant the toebox and matte the 3M tongue. That’s it. If they want to tweak the shape slightly for an even more OG look then I’m all for it but I hope they don’t get too cute with the materials trying to do too much. Excited for these but at the same time my ‘16s aren’t going anywhere lol.
